….the heat that is.

So long to below-normal temps as the heat is poised to return to the Corn Belt in mid-to-late July.

There’s a bit of divergence in opinions how the last half of July plays out as some see this ridge shifting north, bringing more stress to areas of the Plains and Western Corn Belt which will limit production prospects.

All eyes will remain on forecasts in the coming weeks and days but what is important today is seeing forecasted totals verify for some of the driest areas in the middle of the country who have not seen measurable precip in weeks.

From the press release:

Through its Market+ Source sustainable crop program, Indigo Ag will use its proprietary measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) capabilities to help CGB quantify the emissions factor for the grain they purchase from farmers using more sustainable farming practices. These grains would be purchased at a premium and ultimately sold to CGB customers looking to decarbonize their value chains, including food and beverage companies, ingredient companies and regenerative and sustainable fuel producers.

What’s that mean?

You are witnessing the next premium-type program in US grain production.

Similar to non-gmo, I firmly believe we are headed down a path in which bushels that are produced with a smaller carbon footprint (lower CI score) will command a premium with end users.

You might laugh, but carbon is here and it is only going to play a larger role in US agriculture going forward. This is WHY I have a session dedicated to carbon at Summit 23.

If you know me at all, you know I am NOT uber-green, trend-following Susan BUT America is headed to net zero by 2050 and in doing so it will create a lot of opportunities for those of you in ag.

I am talking about both getting paid for farming practices you might already be doing, plus the direction of programs like this where there is a premium up for grabs.
