#1 | One Important Waterway
The Panama Canal is one of the most important waterways in the world, providing a shortcut between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, accommodating 292 million tonnes of cargo (13.5 million semi truck-equivalent) worth more than $310 billion in its last fiscal year.
Petroleum and petroleum products account for nearly one-third of cargo transiting the Canal each year followed by containers and grains.
#2 | Two big users
Grains and oilseeds accounted for 13% of canal transits last year, with nearly half of those originating in the United States.
Brazil is the second-largest origin of grain shipments through the canal at 14% - with their share increasing nearly 40% over the past decade.
Brazil’s unpresented growth and production and subsequent expansion of the Northern Arc ports are a driving factor in their increasing share.
