Grains and oilseeds are the third-largest type of cargo transiting the canal each year, with nearly half of all shipments originating in the United States.
More than one-in-four bushels of U.S. soybean exports transit the Panama Canal each year.
The majority of those bushels begin their journey on farms across middle America, are then barged down the Inland Waterways System and the leave the United States on vessels loaded at the Gulf, utilizing the Canal as a shortcut in route to Asia.
